Perceptions and Reality of a Pandemic in the Hispanic Community – Dr. Tyrone F. Rodriguez

It has been quite a learning experience on adaptation for myself, colleagues, staff and patients in our care. In the Hispanic community my experience has been one of two extremes. One strongly held belief is that CoVid is nothing more than a glorified cold/flu used to scare people. The other a serious life altering virus that has not just immediate effects but long lasting sequelae. The oral cavity through anatomy, physiology prevention and diagnosis has direct links in this pandemic.

Much information has been mixed with misinformation in this uncharted social health crisis. I value my dental training and profession in being at the forefront of infection control, PPE practices and innovation. States like Oregon should be commended in valuing their dental providers in empowering them to administer immunizations. This is clearly the right mindset when appreciating oral health providers that “give shots” on a regular basis as front line health care providers.

It has been close to a year now that our offices, universities and hospitals have been impacted by SARS-CoVid 19. The reality is that this virus and its mutations are here to stay. As a dentist and parent, I understand that effective immunizations and future boosters can only be achieved with proper evidence based information/care that we can help disseminate and deliver as dentists. We are frontline health care team members.
